We are delighted to welcome back Old Salopian and current Royal Northern College of Music student Arthur Yu, to perform a piano recital in the Maidment Auditorium.
His last recital here showed "pristine technique and impressive command of Romantic idiom joined in a show of supple talent and breath-taking vigour" (review by James Fraser-Andrews) and we look forward to showcasing Arthur's development as a talented young pianist.
Arthur was born in Hong Kong to a family where music played an important role in daily life. His father, Lokshing, was a keen amateur musician, being proficient on the violin, flute and on the traditional Chinese Erhu. The family's musical tradition also extended to Arthur's brother Allen, who is a keen amateur pianist and flautist.
Arthur began his piano studies at the age of seven and subsequently his love of the performing arts grew during the six years he spent taking part in rehearsals and performances for the Wah Yan College Symphony Orchestra and Choir in Hong Kong. Whilst there Arthur obtained second prize in the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival (2013) as well as winning the first prize in the Hong Kong Youth Piano Competition (2014). Since September 2015 he studied with the internationally acclaimed Anglo-Italian pianist Peter Bradley-Fulgoni at Shrewsbury School, and in 2017 Arthur was awarded a scholarship to study at the Royal Northern College of Music where he is currently studying piano with the renowned pianist Frank Wibaut.
Arthur has given numerous concerts as both piano soloist and accompanist in chamber music groups in Hong Kong and, in 2016, was a successful competitor in the “Gregynog Young Musician” international music competition and the Shropshire “Young Musician of the Year”. Whilst Arthur was at Shrewsbury School he made a significant contribution to the life of the Music Department, taking part in many concerts. His musical activities at Shrewsbury culminated with performances of both the Grieg Piano Concerto and the Liszt Piano Concerto No.1 with the Shrewsbury School Symphony Orchestra, conducted by John Moore.
Tickets for the Arthur's recital are priced at £8.00 and are available from www.ticketsource.co.uk/shrewsburyschool or from the Events Team on 01743 280812.
