Basketball: Shrewsbury Sharks reach national quarter-final

Wednesday 6 March 2019

Our senior basketball team, 'The Sharks', played the biggest game in their history on Wednesday 6th March with a quarter-final in the national English Basketball Association (EBBA) Cup.

This was a great occasion. Our opponents Charnwood Academy, Loughborough, were the defending champions and are the powerhouse of school basketball with a link to the Leicester Riders professional team. Their boys train two or three times per day and many go on to play professionally in the UK and obtain scholarships to US colleges.

The Sharks gave an excellent account of themselves and remained competitive in every quarter of the match. They perhaps missed a few too many easy shots at key moments to not make the game closer and put more pressure on their opponents.

A final result of 89-49 was a great effort.

The Basketball Club continues to go from strength to strength, as the U18s are already County Champions and the U16s have a chance in the next few weeks to become champions too.

The annual Boys' House and Girls' House Basketball Competitions take place over the next two available Sundays. These are always festivals of fun, flair and no little skill!
