Shrewsbury School

Golf success

Wednesday 19 March 2014

Shrewsbury defeated North Cestrian Grammar School in the Independent Schools’ Golf Association regional plate final on 13th March. Shrewsbury will now go on to represent the region in the National Final at The Shire Golf Club, London on Wednesday 2nd July.

A warm welcome was found at Oswestry Golf Club and the course was in great condition, for the time of year, with fast greens and some narrow fairways. Shrewsbury’s team consisted of Ben Oswald (S IV), James Walker (Rt V) and Jonty Robinson (Rt V).

Ben was up against a big hitting 2 handicapper and was able to play to his own 6 handicap, which proved enough to win by 5 shots. James put aside some driving worries the day before and managed his game well to be a couple clear by the 18th. Jonty took on a big hitting 5 handicapper and played to his strengths to again be a couple ahead at the finish.

The same North Cestrian team made the final of the tournament ‘proper’ last year, so this was an excellent scalp by the three Shrewsbury golfers. Both teams were gracious and excellent ambassadors for their respective schools and we hope to add North Cestrian to our golfing Fasti next year.
