Historic first at Henley Women’s Regatta

Wednesday 27 June 2018

There were some tremendous performances from current and former Salopian oarswomen at Henley Women’s Regatta (HWR), the premier event for women’s rowing in the country.

The RSSBC entered two boats in the Junior Quads and Junior Fours categories. Both crews had to race a time trial early on Saturday morning, with the fastest 16 in each event qualifying for the knock-out stages.

Our four raced well, but unfortunately finished as the fastest non-qualifier.

The quad did qualify, and in the first round were drawn against Henley Rowing Club, who were winners at the National Schools’ Regatta one month ago. Despite the girls’ best efforts, Henley won by 3.5 lengths; they went on to win the event overall.

Old Salopian Cesca Molyneux (EDH 2012-14) was racing for Oxford Brookes University in Aspirational Academic Eights. Having lost to Newcastle in the final last year, Cesca and her crew were delighted to beat them by 1.25 in this year’s final.

Cesca learned to row at Shrewsbury. Ten years on from the beginning of co-education at Shrewsbury, she is the first of hopefully many Salopians to win at HWR.
