A warm, sunny day at Hadley Wood Golf Club in Hertfordshire saw 5 Salopian pairs assemble to re-join battle with the Old Cholmeleians in what has become an annual fixture. Despite being the ‘locals’, Highgate’s numbers were somewhat depleted and a 4-pair fourball match – involving a ‘loan’ from the Salopians - was agreed for the morning, with the spoils being shared: Richard Holt (Ch 1969-73) and Frank Higham (O 1968-72) suffered a reverse at 1st pair, coming up against a very strong, established pair out top for Highgate, as did the Phillips brothers, Tim (Rt 1966-71) and Stanley (Rt 1970-73), turning out together in this fixture for the first time. Good wins by Allan Wright (O 1972-77) and David Umpleby (SH 1990-95), and Jonathan Brooke (S 1962-67) and Charles Hill (SH 1980-84), the Society’s new Hon. Sec., secured our two points. Alas the afternoon was a 3-pair affair, as a couple of Cholms absented themselves (one for a haircut, would you believe?) and the 14-hole Greensomes went their way 2–1, with the loan of one of our better players ironically working out in our favour. A good day’s golf was enjoyed by all, at a Mackenzie Course that is in excellent condition and is now firmly in the top-100 in the Country. The series stands at 4–3 in our favour.
Thanks to Simon Shepherd (O 1977-82), OS and Hadley Wood Member, for all his hard work in organising this fixture. All those who played enjoyed a magnificent Hadley Wood Afternoon Tea which re-fuelled us all for our journeys home.
