RSSBC: Bedford, Notts City and Shrewsbury Regattas

Thursday 16 May 2019

The weekend of the 11th/12th May was one the busiest weekends for the Boat Club, with crews competing at three different regattas around the country in their final preparations for the National Schools' Regatta.

1st VIII

The Boys’ 1st, 2nd, J15A and Girls’ J15A VIIIs travelled to the Bedford Regatta in search of strong competition to fine-tune their race plans.

The event was held in ideal conditions and with plenty of racing for the crews. The Boys’ 1st VIII and 2nd VIII repeated their remarkable feat from last year in both reaching the final of the top Open Eights event, where the 1st VIII took the honours. Both crews also reached the final of their respective events, 1st & 2nd VIIIs, where they both put down an impressive marker of winning in quick times.

2nd VIII

The J15 Boys’ and Girls’ VIIIs both came unstuck against the eventual winners in their rounds of racing. The crews then broke up into fours and quads, with the J15 Boys’ Four and the J15 Girls’ Quad both making the final from a strong field of crews.

The Boys’ Four narrowly lost out to St Paul’s in the final. After four rounds of racing in the knockout format regatta, the Girls’ Quad came up against Kingston Grammar School in the final and produced a fantastic row to win by one-and-a-half lengths.

The Senior Girls’ 1st and 2nd Quads and the J16 Eight travelled to Nottingham for the Notts City Regatta to get some racing on a multi-lane course. The J16 Eight had some tough competition in the final of the J16 event. The crew showed a good turn of speed in the second half of the race to secure third place.

The Girls’ 1st Quad raced in two doubles in the morning and had a close race with each other in the heat to come in first and second. In the final they came in third and fourth. In the Quads racing both crews put out strong performances to win their respective events.
