Student ensemble perform Schumann's Piano Quintet

Thursday 19 June 2014

On Monday 16th June a considerable throng gathered in the Maidment Auditorium for an eagerly anticipated lunchtime performance of Schumann’s Piano Quintet in Eb Op. 44 by Galin Ganchev (M LVI - piano), Calvin Chan (I LVI - violin), Jonathan Cheng (I LVI - violin), Cindy Lin (MSH UVI - viola) and Kevin Jim (I V - cello).

The quintet have worked throughout the academic year preparing this huge work, coached by Maria Eglinton (Head of Wind) and David Joyce (Head of Strings). They have also had the opportunity to perform the first movement to Christopher Hoyle (Head of Strings from the Royal Northern College of Music) and also as part of the Pro Corda Chamber Music Festival where they got through to the Semi-Finals.

Maria Eglinton declared herself delighted with their performance on Monday: “It was of an extremely high standard and the quintet produced a great range of colours and sonorities. The Scherzo was particularly energetic and the whole performance was professional from beginning to end. The quintet have been an absolute delight to work with during the past year and have demonstrated real focus and commitment. I feel they have really achieved an honourable amount!”
