Shrewsbury School

Development Director

Highly Competitive Salary

Shrewsbury School seeks to appoint an outstanding Development Director to succeed the current post holder, who is moving to take up a new role after 12 years of successful development work on behalf of the Foundation. This is a pivotal strategic, senior leadership role. The post holder will build upon the significant fundraising achievements to date and will set the strategy to take the School’s philanthropic endeavours to the next level.

Shrewsbury School is one of the great independent boarding schools. Now fully co-educational with around 800 pupils aged between 13-18, it is a school which celebrates the individual and offers a broad, holistic education that values the learning that happens outside as much as within the classroom. Founded in 1552 by royal charter from King Edward VI, Shrewsbury is situated in 110 acres of beautiful parkland, wrapped within a loop of the River Severn. The wider Shrewsbury School family includes three international schools and a local preparatory school, the merger with which was recently announced.

This role comes at an exciting time in the long history of the School. Over the last decade, Shrewsbury has successfully introduced co-education and implemented an ambitious capital investment programme. These bold initiatives have been extremely successful and Shrewsbury pupil numbers are at an all-time high. With the arrival of a new Headmaster, Leo Winkley, in September 2018, the School is looking to build on the successes of recent years as it moves into its next cycle of development.

Shrewsbury School Foundation is the oldest independent school foundation in the UK. The School believes strongly in its social mission and charitable purposes and the Foundation plays a vital role in generating funds for its sizeable bursary programme which widens access to the School, and capital for major building projects. The Foundation is in excellent health, ably supported and championed by its new Chair and other trustees and is now on the brink of an exciting new phase of progression under new and highly engaged leadership.

Reporting directly to the Headmaster – and with a ‘dotted’ line to the Foundation Chair – the Development Director will lead a dedicated team in all aspects of fundraising. The successful candidate will also have line management responsibility for the Director of the Salopian Club, working closely with the Club to make maximum benefit of the strong loyalties of the Old Salopian alumni community.

The ideal candidate will be an accomplished leader in a comparable organisation, either in education or a transferable field, with a successful track record in fundraising. The successful candidate will be a creative thinker with a strong sense of integrity and a values-driven approach to philanthropic fundraising. The successful candidate will have a proven record in securing gifts from major donors together with experience of developing inspiring campaign messaging, expertise in relationship management, outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, and the presence and intellect to operate at the highest levels. Above all, the successful candidate will have a passion for the aims and mission of Shrewsbury School.

This position is a career-defining opportunity for an exceptional individual to play a pivotal role in one of the most established schools’ fundraising teams in the UK, at an exciting new phase in its development work.

An excellent remuneration package is offered, reflecting the seniority and significance of the position and would include relocation support if needed.
