Girls play hockey predominately in the Michaelmas Term and usually have between 12 and18 matches a term on Wednesdays and Saturdays. These include local fixtures against Wrekin College, Ellesmere, Moreton Hall and Shrewsbury High School, as well as travelling to schools further afield such as Christ College Brecon and Repton.
We host all the girls' County Hockey Tournaments, which includes the U14, U16 and U18 Championships. Shrewsbury School also hosts the ‘Shropshire Hockey Development Group’ meetings, with Mrs E Kelly (1st XI Coach) as Secretary.
Our two astros are well used: Shrewsbury School is a training venue for the girls' and boys' County Hockey Squads, with a number of tournaments being hosted every weekend. We also host an Invitational U16s' Tournament every year and a Prep Schools' Festival during the Michaelmas Term.
With Shrewsbury Hockey Club around the corner, a number of our students train outside of school on a Tuesday evening. This is in addition to the 4-5 sessions they have each week on site at Shrewsbury. Mrs Kelly runs an ‘Elite Development’ Programme on a Tuesday and Friday for those students who wish to push their hockey to the next level. It is well attended by the 1st and 2nd XIs.
Our U16 and U18 girls are currently County Champions and both progressed to the Midlands Regional Zone. Our U16s narrowly missed out, but our U18s progressed to the Midlands Final – a fantastic achievement and a rarity for a Shropshire School. At this level the girls often compete with Uppingham, Bromsgrove, Oakham, Rugby, Trent and Oundle.
In October 2017 the girls enjoyed a very successful tour to Holland - a fantastic experience for all and a tour that will no doubt be repeated again soon.
