Dance
“Dance is the purest expression of every emotion, earthly and spiritual.”
Anna Pavlova
Dance is one of the fastest-growing activities at Shrewsbury and we are confident in continuing our tradition of Old Salopians studying drama, dance and technical theatre at many of the country’s top universities and conservatories.
Tuition is provided for boys and girls of all age groups and abilities and with classes and 1:1 private dance sessions available in Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Commerical and Contemporary there are styles to suit everyone. We are proud to be able to offer exams through the ISTD (Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing) in Ballet, Tap, Modern and Contemporary and we currently have a number of pupils working towards their exams.
Barnes Theatre
The Barnes Theatre Auditorium (250 capacity) is an intimate setting for plays, rehearsals, lectures and workshops and is complete with a full lighting rig and PA system. Unveiled in 2020 before an official opening in 2022 by revered actor and Old Salopian Sir Michael Palin, Barnes has played host to over ten shows annually, including whole school plays and musicals, house plays, new writing and student-directed work.
Home to two state-of-the-art, sprung-floor drama and dance studios, technical workshop space and generous front-of-house facilities. All of our productions are supported by a student technical team, who are trained and supported by two full-time technicians.
John Weaver, the father of English ballet, who was a master at Shrewsbury, would be proud of the recent renaissance of dance at Shrewsbury. Each year sees a sell-out dance showcase, and junior and senior competition teams who are competing locally and nationally in contemporary, ballet, jazz and tap.

Under the spotlight
Shrewsbury ensures there are chances for pupils to express themselves and showcase their talents with an annual dance showcase and 2 school musicals per year. As well as productions on the school stage there are further opportunities to join the Junior or Senior Competition teams with competitions throughout the year.
Anya Tonks (OS, MSH, 2015-2020)
Anya joined Shrewsbury School and launched herself into the Dance opportunities available here.
She performed in many theatre and dance shows while at school, including The Drowned Bride, which was taken to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in the summer of 2018.
After completing her A Levels, Anya began teaching at Shrewsbury International School in Bangkok, where she taught P.E. As a gap-year student she was given the privilege to design a new programme for Dance at Shrewsbury International School, offering new opportunities to the school and pupils, as well as running a Dance Showcase for over 60 children with a range of different abilities.
Anya returned to the U.K after 8 months abroad, and in Summer 2021 she was offered the role of Assistant Choreographer for the National Youth Music Theatre in their adaptation of Billy the Kid.
She is currently in her second year at Falmouth University, studying Dance and Choreography.
