vēni, vīdi, didicī – I came, I saw, I learned! Latin Outreach at Shrewsbury School
Classical Civilisation students from Shrewsbury Sixth Form College were welcomed to the Kennedy Building (where the Classics Faculty is based) to start their Introduction to Latin course.
The course is part of the school’s outreach programme to local state schools and is run by Head of Classics Paul Fitzgerald.
Mr Fitzgerald said: "In the past I have organised teaching Latin at local primary schools but introducing post GCSE students to the language is a joy; none of the students have studied Latin before, but all of them have GCSEs in modern languages such as French or Spanish, so they are curious to see how Latin ‘works’ and how it relates to these European Romance languages."
Johan B. from the College said: "I studied Spanish for GCSE last year, and I can see the connections and the similarities in spellings and vocabulary. It also fits in nicely with my Classical Civilisation studies."
The course is scheduled to run for an initial period of 8 weeks.
