Shrewsbury School

Athletics has a proud history at Shrewsbury, boasting an Olympic gold medallist among our Old Salopians in the form of Bob Tisdall for the 400m Hurdles in 1932. Though the School lost its own track in the mid-1990s, the sport has been resurgent in recent years and now boasts a team that competes with some of the best schools in the country.

In the Summer Term, pupils compete in a full fixture-list, including meets at RGS Worcester, Uppingham, King Edward’s School Birmingham and the Achilles Relays at Iffley Road, Oxford. We also compete in more local fixtures, such as the Shropshire AA County Champs, the English Schools Champs, the Wrekin Relays and the ESAA Track and Field Cup.

We train three times per week at the London Road facility, and have specialist coaches in a number of disciplines to cater to individual goals and strengths. We also have a healthy programme of inter-House athletics events, including the Sidney-Darwin Dash and Quarter-Mile Challenge, as well as the annual Sports Day, held at the London Road track as part of Salopian Week.
