Emma Darwin Hall - August 2011Housemistress: Mrs Kait Weston
(House colours: Wedgwood Blue and Green)
Address: Emma Darwin Hall, Shrewsbury School, 50 Kennedy Road, Shrewsbury SY3 7AA
Telephone: 01743 280880

Emma Darwin Hall opened in September 2011 for Sixth Form girls, thus becoming the second girls' house at Shrewsbury School.  Our first girls' house, Mary Sidney Hall, was also purpose-built and opened its doors to girls in September 2008 when Shrewsbury's Sixth Form became co-educational. A third girls' house - The Grove - was opened in September 2014, when we moved to full co-education at Shrewsbury and welcomed our first cohort of Third and Fourth Form girls.

Emma Darwin Hall provides superb accommodation for both day girls and boarders. The accommodation is light and airy yet cosy. The social spaces are generous and the house is modern in every sense. The girls enjoy their own courtyard and gardens.

Meet the Housemistress...
Kait Weston, the founding Housemistress of Emma Darwin Hall, was raised in Somerset on a diet of Pony Club competitions and long country walks.  She was educated at Taunton School and read Biology at Cardiff University.

After stints on conservation projects in Africa and Greece, Kait undertook an M.Sc. in Pest Management at Newcastle University and continued her education at Oxford University.  She has rowed for the 1st VIII at all three universities and has been in the winning crew for both the Northern Universities Boat Race and the Oxford-Cambridge Boat Race.

Kait joined Shrewsbury as a Biology teacher in 2004, tutoring in Severn Hill before becoming Assistant Housemaster in Port Hill (2008-11). During her time here she has set up the School Council, coached countless J14 crews and run the Listening Team.

Married to Andrew, they have two sons, Charlie (born in 2006) and Bertie (born 2 years, 10 hours and 46 minutes later in 2008).

Outside the classroom, Kait enjoys gardening and keeping fit. She and Andrew have recently taken up half-marathon running, training with and against each other whenever time, weather and commitments allow.  Less energetic pursuits include camping in her 40-year-old VW campervan and handicraft. The EDH bunting is testament to her enthusiasm for the House and her inability to keep still.
