General Maintenance Operative

General Maintenance Operative

Permanent, full-time, 52 weeks

We wish to appoint a General Maintenance Operative to join an established team in providing first line and general site support services to the Works Department Trades and the School as a whole.

We are looking for a flexible individual who has the required basic skills and the right personality to get the job done. Essentially, you must have previous experience of supporting building trades, DIY skills, together with the ability to complete arduous tasks. You must hold a full driving licence, with knowledge of basic vehicle maintenance as you will be required to undertake first line assistance with the School Vehicle Fleet. Other duties will include preventative maintenance works, Portable Appliance Testing (training will be provided, if required), recycling, collecting and delivering materials, furniture and other general maintenance tasks.

This is a full-time position working Monday to Friday, and Saturday mornings on a rotational basis. Please see the recruitment pack for further details on the rota.

The salary will be up to £25,698 per annum, plus generous benefits to include enhanced holiday entitlement and pension contributions, life insurance, free school lunch when kitchens are operational, free car parking and free use of the library, swimming pool, gym, tennis courts and squash courts.

Matron (Residential)

Matron (Residential)

6 days per week, term-time plus 3 additional weeks in the holidays.

Shift Hours – 07:15 - 09:30, 12:30 - 17:45, 21:00 - 22:30, 6 days a week.

Accommodation is provided within the house to allow for the performance of this role.

We have an exciting opportunity to appoint a full-time Matron to a key residential role, working in an established and effective House team.  The successful candidate will assist the Housemaster with the pastoral care and wellbeing of all pupils in the House and promote the collective experience of living in a school community.  2/3rds of the pupils in the house are boarders meaning they live and sleep at school.

The successful candidate will have:

  • Excellent communication and organisational skills
  • Proven ability to form professional relationships with teenagers
  • A sympathetic and understanding approach with a good sense of humour
  • Previous supervisory skills
  • Good all-round IT skills

The Matron’s main responsibility is to support the Housemaster by ensuring the safety, welfare and happiness of the pupils, and the smooth running of the domestic and laundry arrangements of the house.  The Matron requires understanding and sympathy with the pupils, balancing friendly disposition with the need to maintain discipline. 

In addition to a very interesting and rewarding role, we offer a competitive salary up to £26,892 per annum, generous pension contributions, private medical insurance, life insurance, school lunch, free car parking, free use of school facilities when not in use by pupils (library, swimming pool, gym, tennis courts, squash courts) and access to a cycle to work scheme.

Joiner / Carpenter

Joiner / Carpenter

Competitive salary, full-time, permanent, term time and school holidays.

Shrewsbury School is looking to appoint an experienced Joiner / Carpenter to undertake work around the School estate. This role is varied in scale and complexity and contains a mixture of responsive maintenance and planned refurbishment works. The ideal candidate will have relevant and demonstratable work experience in a carpentry environment and be capable of working efficiently in the Joinery Workshop and around the school estate with minimal supervision. 

The normal hours of work will be 39 hours per week working from Monday to Friday, 8am to 4.30pm with an early finish at 3.30pm on a Friday, working both during term time and school holidays. There may be overtime opportunities in accordance with the needs of the school, and these hours are paid in addition to salary at an enhanced rate.

Front of House Supervisor

We are seeking a Front of House Supervisor for Dining Halls at Shrewsbury School, they will be responsible for ensuring the smooth operation of daily dining services as well as coordinating and overseeing special events, such as formal dinners, balls, and receptions. What you’ll do: 

Daily Operations: 

  • Oversee the day-to-day front of house operations for all dining halls, ensuring a high standard of service is always maintained. 
  • Supervise and train front of house staff, including servers and dining attendants, to ensure efficient and courteous service. 
  • Coordinate with kitchen staff to ensure timely and accurate delivery of meals, addressing any issues or special requests promptly. 
  • Maintain a welcoming and orderly dining environment, managing seating arrangements, table settings, and overall cleanliness. 
  • Monitor inventory of front of house supplies (e.g. linens, tableware) and coordinate with the Dining Services Manager to ensure adequate stock. 

Special Events: 

  • Plan and supervise the execution of special occasions, including formal balls, themed dinners, and other school events, ensuring they are delivered to the highest standards. 
  • Collaborate with event organisers, including school administration and external vendors, to finalise event details such as menus, seating plans, and service styles. 
  • Oversee event setup and breakdown, ensuring that all elements (e.g., decorations, AV equipment) are in place and functioning as needed. 
  • Lead the front of house team during events, ensuring smooth service flow and addressing any issues in real-time. 
  • Ensure that all health and safety regulations are adhered to during events.
