Having been a boarding house for boys since 1989, The Grove underwent significant refurbishment and welcomed 45 girls into the House in September 2014. Both boarders and day girls now enjoy a cosy 'home from home' atmosphere in warm and comfortable accommodation looking out over Bottom Common, part of the School's playing fields.
A number of senior girls chose to move to The Grove to help get it up and running in its first year, to ensure a full and active House community.
Meet the House Team...
Housemistress Clare Wilson was born and raised in Yorkshire before reading Education, Sociology and Sport at the University of Durham. Whilst at Durham, she rowed for the University Boat Club and won countless events, including the British Universities' Championship and Henley Women's Regatta two years running. She then spent a year working as a resident tutor at Bryanston School, before returning to Durham as a full-time rowing coach in charge of identifying talented freshers – including the odd future Olympian!
Since 2008, Clare has taught Religious Studies and PSHE, as well as being Head of Girls' Rowing at Shrewsbury. She was appointed Assistant Housemistress of our second girls' house, Emma Darwin Hall, when it opened in 2011. She wants The Grove to be a relaxed and friendly community where girls feel able to be themselves regardless of their interests or background. The girls regularly join Clare and her family for a Sunday roast dinner, borrow from her DVD collection, or just enjoy their downtime in one of the many social spaces. Clare’s baking obsession is well known around the house!
Clare is joined in The Grove by her husband Rob, a Maths Master and rowing coach at Shrewsbury. They have a young daughter, Elsie, born in July 2013, and a son, Jack, born in February 2016. They also share The Grove with their hyperactive Hungarian Vizsla, Aggie.
Rob Wilson read Engineering at the University of Durham having grown up in rural Suffolk. He worked for Westland Helicopters in Yeovil before returning to Durham to complete a PGCE. It was from there that he came to Shrewsbury in 2007 to teach Mathematics.
Attracted by the pull of the Severn, Rob has coached rowing to all four corners of the Boat Club. He achieved notable success running the J14 squad from 2009-12, coaching the J14A crew to win the Cherwell Cup at the National Schools' Regatta in 2010 and 2012. Then from 2012-16 he coached the J16 rowing squad where the crews won four National Schools' medals under his stewardship. In 2013 he coached the winning GB J16 VIII in the annual match against France. He now coaches with the Senior Girls' squad. Rob is also in charge of all our internal rowing competitions, including the annual Bumping Races at the end of the Summer Term.
During his time at Shrewsbury Rob has also run two major overseas expeditions, to Venezuela in 2009 and to Malawi in 2011. Rob was previously a Tutor in Oldham's Hall and Ingram’s Hall (where for a short time he was the Assistant Housemaster).
