International Applicants

Shrewsbury School crest

We welcome applicants for admission at 13+ (Year 9), 14+ (Year 10) and 16+ (Year 12).

Below you will find useful guides to help you begin your journey with Shrewsbury.

For more information, please contact our Admissions Department.

13+ and 14+ applicants

13+ and 14+ applicants take our own entrance exams in Maths, English and French* (* if studied for longer than 1 year – 13+ applicants ONLY).

All applicants should be registered with us before sitting the examination.

Exams are ideally taken in November prior to the applicant joining in the following September. For example, an applicant looking to join Shrewsbury School in September 2025 would take our Entrance exams in November 2024. Exams can be taken at Shrewsbury School as well as at the applicant’s current school, a local law firm or a local Consulate.

Please note that parents will need to cover any administrative costs for overseeing these exams. All exams should be taken on the same day and administered under strict exam conditions. Results will be communicated within 2 weeks of sitting the exams.

Offers are only unconditional once a suitable academic and character reference has been received from the applicant's current school.

We would prefer to meet applicants in person, ideally during a tour of the School. If this is not possible, then we would conduct a Zoom interview.

Past examination papers are available on request from the Admissions Office.

16+ applicants

16+ applicants take our own entrance exams in four written papers of their choice, as well as being interviewed by one of the Admissions Tutors. We would prefer to meet applicants in person, ideally during a tour of the School.  If this is not possible, then we would conduct a Zoom interview.

All applicants should be registered with us before sitting the examinations. For further details, please see our Sixth Form Admissions page.

Please email the Sixth Form Admissions Tutor, Matthew Clark if you have any queries: [email protected].

Visa and Guardianship

Info for Overseas Entrants joining in September 2024

Guardians

All pupils who reside outside the UK are required to have a guardian, who will be expected to accommodate you in a home environment in the UK during exeats, Coach weekends and other holidays if you are unable to return home, and arrange any transport you may need.

Full details are outlined in our Guardianship Policy, which includes a Guardianship Agreement form that needs to be signed by your guardian and by your parents and returned to [email protected]Shrewsbury School Guardianship Policy and Agreement.

Please note that we cannot issue a 'Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies' (CAS) number for your visa application until we have received this form.

Additional information and advice on guardianship can be found via AEGIS (The Association for the Education and Guardianship of International Students), an organisation that inspects and accredits guardianship providers in the UK and works to promote the welfare of international students. Please see their website for further details: www.aegisuk.net.

Pupils residing outside the UK who require a Child Student Visa

All pupils who are resident outside the UK and who do not hold a British passport will require a Child Student visa in order to study at Shrewsbury School.

Please download and read our guidance notes for applying for a visa. The Timeline and Checklist document below is a quick reference guide:

Shrewsbury School Visa Guidance

Timeline and Checklist

Finance Declaration

These notes explain the process of applying for a visa and specify the items you will need to supply to Shrewsbury School in order to receive your ‘Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies’ (CAS) number. This is important, as you will need to use this for your visa application.

Please note that if you have a Child Student visa from another UK school, this will not be accepted by Shrewsbury School. You will need to apply for a new visa under Shrewsbury School's sponsorship licence.

Pupils residing outside the UK who do not require a visa

If you are a British National living overseas, you do not require a visa to study at Shrewsbury School.

Once you have accepted your place at Shrewsbury, we will require the following items:

  • a copy of your passport (photo page)
  • our Guardianship Agreement form, signed by the guardian and by your parents, as outlined in our Guardianship Policy (see 'Guardians' section above).

EU Settlement Scheme

If you are an EU or EEU citizen and have applied for settled or pre-settled status prior to 30 June 2021, we will require the following items:

  • a copy of your passport (photo page).
  • copy of the letter from the Home Office confirming your status.
  • Share code to prove your immigration status.

Pupils already resident in the UK who hold a non-British Passport

Once you have accepted your place at Shrewsbury, we will require the following items:

  • a copy of your passport (photo page)
  • a copy of any current permission you already hold to remain in the UK. For example, indefinite leave to remain, Tier 1 Investor or Dependent visa,
  • Parent's documentation with permission to remain in the UK.
  • our Guardianship Agreement form, signed by the guardian and by your parents, as outlined in our Guardianship Policy (see 'Guardians' section above), if applicable.

Current Fifth Form Students proceeding to Lower Sixth Form

Please note that Child Student visas are issued for the length of your course (i.e. 2-3 years for GCSE, or 2 years for A Level). Therefore if you are a current pupil at Shrewsbury School moving from Fifth Form to Lower Sixth, you will need to apply for a new Child Student visa before returning to school to begin your A Level studies in September (even if your old visa has not yet expired).
