Shrewsbury offers a rich and varied hockey programme to boys and girls of all ages providing them with the skills to compete on a county and national level.

Our two astros are well used: We host the County Hockey Tournaments, which include the U14, U16 and U18 Championships and Shrewsbury is a training venue for the girls' and boys' County Hockey Squads, with a number of tournaments being hosted every weekend. We also host an Invitational U16s' Tournament every year and a Prep Schools' Festival during the Michaelmas Term.

Training and Programmes

With Shrewsbury Hockey Club around the corner, a number of our students train outside of school on a Tuesday or Wednesday evening. This is in addition to the 4-5 sessions they have each week on-site at Shrewsbury and also includes a 'High Performance’ Programme on Tuesdays and Fridays for those students who wish to push their hockey to the next level. It is well attended by the 1st and 2nd XIs.

Shrewsbury welcomes external hockey coaches to School to support the development of our players through all age groups.

Achievements and Tours

Hockey at Shrewsbury has developed through the years and our teams, from U14 to U18, are regularly County Champions, with the most recent being our U18 Girls who won the 2021 edition. Shrewsbury has also been successful in shorter formats including 7-a-side.

Teams compete on a national basis and consistently reach the latter stages of the England Hockey and Independent Schools National competitions.

Tours are a highlight in the hockey calendar and recent trips have included a successful girls' tour to Holland - a fantastic experience for all.

We are proud to support players through their hockey journey and we currently have several boys and girls in the England Performance Centre (PC) pathway.

Sports Scholar Kate Richardson (OS) was awarded a scholarship in 2022 to the University of Maine.
