Sixth Form (Year 12)

Shrewsbury School crest

Shrewsbury’s Sixth Form offers girls and boys two years of rich intellectual stimulus in the classroom, a wealth of experience and opportunity outside it, and an ideal preparation for life beyond.

Within this new intellectual landscape, the range of academic disciplines is broad, the teaching of a very high standard, and the results excellent.  The facilities for teaching, sports, music, arts and performing arts are first class.

Shrewsbury is a school of great breadth but of high achievement; our Oxbridge entry record, averaging around 15 places a year, our concert and dramatic performances in London and Edinburgh, and the results of our sporting teams at national and international levels endorse that.

We are looking for boys and girls who may already have strong and marked interests and abilities, but who also want to explore the breadth and variety of Sixth Form life at Shrewsbury and make a fine contribution to school life before proceeding to university and their chosen career.

If you have not already done so, you are invited to register your son or daughter by filling in a Registration Form and returning it to us with the Registration Fee of £100.

Application forms for 2024 entry should be returned to us by Monday 2nd October 2023.

The key parts of the Application Pack are the Registration Form (for candidates who have not yet registered as prospective students at Shrewsbury), Academic Application form and the Personal Statement. Also included are our Specialist Scholarship forms (further details below).

  • Candidates must be Registered to take our assessments and there is a £100 fee for this.
  • All candidates must complete the Academic Application form and the Personal Statement.
  • Candidates only need to complete our Art, Drama, Music or Sports Scholarship forms if they wish to apply for a specialist scholarship.  (Candidates may apply for more than one scholarship.)

Once we have received candidates' application forms, we will produce timetables for written papers, interviews and assessments. Candidates who are entitled to special provision in examinations (e.g. extra time, or use of laptop) will receive this for their entrance examinations, but will need to provide evidence in the form of an Educational Psychologist's report to accompany their application forms.

Assessments and Interviews

Sixth Form Assessments (arrangements for assessment in November 2023)

We will write to you in July/August 2023 to confirm that your child intends to take our entrance exams and to enclose our application form.

On the application form, candidates will nominate three subjects for assessment.  Ideally, these should be the subjects that they intend to take for A Level.  However, we recognise that some applicants will not yet have firm plans for their A Levels and we suggest that they offer three of their strongest GCSE subjects.  (Candidates for whom English is not their first language will additionally be required to offer English as an Additional Language as a fourth paper.)

Exam papers will be set in accordance with GCSE specifications, albeit in the knowledge that candidates will not yet have finished their GCSE courses.  Papers will be one hour in length.  Our Specimen Papers section below contains past papers.

Candidates will also undertake an interview with a senior member of staff.  This will be informed by the Personal Statement that is part of the Application Form and in which candidates can tell us more about their interests and achievements.  We will also ask for permission to write to the applicant’s current headteacher for a reference.

The Entrance Examinations will be held in November 2023.  International candidates will be able to take the written papers either at an Examination Centre in their home country or at the offices of Academic Asia and UK Boarding Schools.  We would anticipate that international candidates will take the exams in November 2023.

Scholarships

We will be offering approximately 8 academic scholarships and 12 other specialist scholarships that include Art, Drama, Music and Sport.  Academic scholarships will be awarded as a result of exceptional performance in the entrance examination. The other specialist scholarships will be assessed at the same time as the November entrance examinations, through practical assessment and interview.

The key parts of the Application Pack are the Registration Form (for candidates who have not yet registered as prospective students at Shrewsbury), Academic Application form and the Personal Statement. Also included are our Specialist Scholarship forms.

In addition, we offer two sporting scholarships: The Margaret Cassidy Sports Scholarship is for an outstanding sportsman (worth up to 100% of fees, subject to means testing); and the Alex Wilson Scholarship is awarded every year to a local sportsperson of exceptional talent (worth up to 100% of day fees, subject to means testing).

Offers of Places

We will aim to have made our decisions by early December, and will then offer successful candidates a place in our Sixth Form, conditional on them achieving at least three GCSEs at Grade 7 and three GCSEs at Grade 5 (or three A and three B grades).

You will be sent an offer letter including an Acceptance of a Conditional Place form which needs to be completed and returned with the relevant deposit.  The deposit is 10% of a term’s fee. For families whose normal residence is outside the UK, there is an additional deposit which is 90% of the current fee for one term.

It is possible that places may remain unfilled following the entrance examinations in November. If so, then late applicants will follow a similar assessment procedure and places will be offered on a 'first come, first served' basis.
