Meet the Housemaster...
Matthew was a boarder at Bishop’s Stortford College in Hertfordshire before reading for a degree in Business Administration and Social Studies at the University of Aston in Birmingham. His professional teaching experience began with a PCGE at Middlesex University, after which he was appointed to the staff at Aldenham School, to teach Business Studies and Maths. Amongst other things, while at Aldenham, Matthew completed his Master’s degree and learned to play fives. Indeed, it was fives that first brought him to Shrewsbury, when the School hosted the National Schools’ Championships in 2008.
Matthew was appointed as a teacher of Business and Economics at Shrewsbury in 2009, and since then he has also taught Maths, PHSE and EPQ (Extended Project Qualification). He has been involved fully in the wider life of the School, in particular through coaching football, fives and cricket, as well as with responsibilities as Master in Charge of Quod and the School Council. However, it is from his pastoral role that Matthew derives the most satisfaction and housemastering has been a firm ambition for many years. Prior to his appointment as Housemaster of Rigg’s Hall, Matthew was the Assistant Housemaster in School House for two years, having previously been a Tutor in the House.
Matthew has a diverse range of interests outside of school. He is passionate about all sport and, although he no longer plays as much as he used to, he occasionally manages to squeeze in a game of fives or the odd round of golf when time allows. Matthew enjoys reading, listening to classical music and keeping up to date with current affairs. He has also recently taken up geocaching, which allows him to combine his interests in history and archaeology with walking and enjoying the fabulous Shropshire countryside.
Above all, Matthew is devoted to his family. He is married to Debbie, who he met at university, and they have three daughters, Amelia (2007), Lucy (2008) and Florence (2011).
