The Futures mantra of the ‘right fit for the right individual’ is never more apt when considering applications to the United States, where the system is very different and the choice in institution is much more varied than in the UK.

On this page, you can find out how we support our pupils on that journey, as well as some of the destinations to which they have gone in recent years. Further information can be found in our guide on ‘Applying to US Universities’. Equally, the Head of Sixth Form, who is responsible for all university applications, is happy to discuss university planning with prospective families.

‘Applying to US Universities’ Guide

Shrewsbury is also a registered SAT centre, which means that pupils do not have to go far to sit the test; we also provide training for those looking to take the test, which takes place over the course of the Lower Sixth.

Scholarship Opportunities for Shrewsbury Students

Merit-based Scholarships: Shrewsbury is a nominating school for various US merit-based scholarships, including the prestigious Morehead Cain scholarship to the University of North Carolina.  Two Old Salopians are current holders of the award, which covers the cost of all tuition, board and lodging, as well as an enrichment programme.

Sports Scholarships: A good number of applicants to the US each year are looking for sports scholarships and pathways, with recent Salopians receiving awards for football, rowing, athletics, golf and hockey.  The Head of Sixth Form works with the various teachers in charge of sports to support these applications, producing highlight reels where necessary and liaising with the NCAA.

Application Timeline

Planning a successful application to an American college or university takes a considerable amount of time and research.  As such, the timeline is typically earlier than for UK universities; the universities team, led by the Head of Sixth Form, will guide students through step of their application and offer a comprehensive programme to assist with their decisions.  The timeline below offers an overview of the process.

Other International Universities

As well as the United States, Shrewsbury is well versed in supporting pupils in applying to many other international destinations, notably to Canada, Australia and Europe. The same level of support is offered for these applications; as a member of the International Association for College Admission Counselling, the Head of Sixth Form also has access to expert help where required.
