Fourth Formers host Beekeeping Workshop for Primary School pupils
Our Fourth Form Beekeeping team recently headed to Longlands Primary School - Logan P (R) tells us about the workshop.
On the 24th November, the beekeeping team of four 4th Formers hosted a workshop at Longlands Primary School entitled “All Things Bees” to a class of 26 Year Six children that were split into four separate groups and rotated around each workshop in 40 minutes of fun.
The first activity was an experience inside a bee suit and a short lesson of vital beekeeping equipment. This activity was run by George R (PH) who has been doing beekeeping since September and would love a hive for Christmas.
The next activity was a presentation of wax and as crazy as it sounds, the pupils were able to make sturdy, decent looking candles in just 5 minutes! This activity was hosted by Danny C (SH) who has been doing beekeeping weekly for over a year since September 2021.
The penultimate activity was a realistic view of many different stages of a beehive’s year. This virtual hive was made by bringing one of the supers (storage units) in the hive and sticking pictures of simply different stages of the frames through the year. This activity was presented by Chenhui S (SH) who has also been doing beekeeping with Danny for just over a year.
The final activity was a test of taste and sight where the pupils were challenged to guess the most expensive of four different honey types. This could be guessed correctly by tasting the richness of it and looking at the thick strong texture. I hosted this activity, and I have been doing beekeeping since the start of this year.
Overall, the exhibition was a great success to help the understanding of bees to a school with their brand-new honeybee emblem. There is also a possibility of more exhibitions like this to other schools with just the Volunteering group on Thursdays.
