Shrewsbury School

OS Golfing Society

Founded in 1928, the Old Salopian Golfing Society exists to bring Salopian golfers together to play at some of the finest courses in the UK. Visit GolfAtlas.com to savour the distinction of the courses where we play: Blackwell, Luffness New, Hoylake, Huntercombe, Muirfield, New Zealand, North Berwick, Tandridge, Trentham, Woburn, Worfield & Worplesdon.

These meetings provide Salopian golfers with a proper golfing challenge and a great opportunity to meet up with old friends and to make new contacts.

Events include an annual national knockout tournament for the Campion Trophy and the Halford Hewitt Cup – the highlight of the independent schools’ golfing calendar.  Please find attached our 2018 Fasti here.

The Halford Hewitt Cup team is selected from our finest golfers, under the captaincy of Andy Pollock. This is a prestigious and highly competitive tournament played between 64 leading independent schools. Our gifted golfers of riper years  compete against other schools at West Hill GC, in the G L Mellin Tournament (for over 55s) and the Bunny Millard (for over 75s), winning the G L Mellin Salver last year, under the captaincy of Peter Worth.

Meetings are also heavily subsidised for Salopians less than 30 years of age. OSGS supports golf at the Schools in co-operation with Mark Schofield, Master in charge of golf.

The Campion Trophy  is open to all members and allows them to meet other Salopian golfers and play on their courses. This year's draw has taken place and may be downloaded here.

A copy of the Rules of the Campion Trophy may be downloaded here.

Membership

The Society welcomes golfers with a handicap of 28 or less. Mothers and Fathers of Salopians, Members of Staff and of the Governing Body are also warmly encouraged to join the Society and play in our meetings. We are an inclusive society.

The annual subscription fee is only £25, and an OSGS tie is available from the Hon Sec at £20.

Membership of the Society entitles those OSGS golfers working in the London area to apply for special membership of The Royal Cinque Ports Golf Club at Deal. This is a privilege which many younger golfers based in London have taken up.

Members will be informed of all fixture dates and Society news in January each year.

    Pre-Henley Regatta Golf Meeting

Located nearly 700 feet above sea level at one of the highest points in the Chilterns, Huntercombe golf course is one of the finest inland courses in England. Established in 1901 the course sits within carefully managed mature woodland with some stunning views from the second hole in particular. Immaculate fairways and subtle contouring on unique greens make the course a delight to play.

Being fairly flat, apart from the 2nd and 3rd holes, it offers a comfortable round for players of all ages and ability. Sabrina members of any standard who can successfully navigate their way around a golf course and the OSGS are very fortunate to have the opportunity to play this magnificent course on the eve of Henley Royal Regatta in a very relaxed informal environment.

This is followed by an excellent first class supper and the opportunity to catch up with friends and fellow Sabrina members in the evening before encountering the delights of Henley Royal Regatta the following day. Non golfers are very welcome to just attend the supper. Please try to support this event if you can to ensure the tradition continues. An excellent day in a very convivial environment is guaranteed, even if a high score on the day is not! Full details of the event and a reply form are available here.

    Huntercombe Meeting

This is the OS Golf Society's special pre-Henley day and will be the last one before their Secretary, Tim Lewis, retires after many years of great service. Those who are interested in attending, either to play a round of golf or just to come for the excellent supper, should email Rod Spiby – Rod.Spiby@bulleys.co.uk. Thirty people came last year; it would be lovely if we could get more this time.

Calling All Golfers! - Please save the date

In conjunction with the Old Salopian Golfing Society (OSGS), the Shrewsbury School Parents' Association is organising a golf fixture at Hawkstone Park on Sunday 2nd September.

The OSGS is a very friendly and active group and they are keen to encourage parents who are not necessarily Old Salopians themselves to come and join their ranks.

Further details about this fixture will be published soon - and in the meantime, do please contact David Schofield for more information.
