Shrewsbury School’s Sports Facilities Department provides an outstanding range of sporting, health and fitness opportunities for all ages. 

Based in the School's multi-million-pound sports complex, we offer a wide range of activities that make full use of our outstanding facilities, including: 

  • 25-metre deck-level pool
  • State-of-the-art fitness suite
  • Racquets Club offering four squash and four tennis courts
  • 3-court Sports Hall
  • Shooting range
  • Indoor Cricket Centre
  • 2 synthetic hockey pitches and 1 synthetic football pitch
  • Elite training Boat House, including ergos and an indoor tank
  • An array of excellent grass playing pitches for a number of sports.

The Shrewsbury School Swimming Academy is open to children aged 4 and upwards, this is delivered by experienced, DBS-checked, ASA-qualified instructors. Classes are small, graded by ability, and overseen by a dedicated Swimming Co-ordinator. 

The Sports Facilities team also operates a range of fun, safe and educational courses and Sports Academies during the school holidays for children. 

We are delighted to announce the development of the Shropshire Squash and Racquets Club, offering use of the School’s excellent tennis and squash courts. Members have the ability to book courts online and play in the Club's healthy competitive and social calendar.

Our Public Partners

Shrewsbury School is pleased to announce partnerships with several National Governing Bodies of major UK sports. The partnership allows the delivery of coach education courses using the School's exemplary facilities.

Shrewsbury School is mindful of its duty to safeguard and promote the welfare of all its pupils, staff and visitors.  As part of the School’s Health and Safety procedures, we ask that all visitors familiarise themselves with the information and protocols listed below regarding general site rules and regulations for using our sports facilities.  We would like to ensure that your visit and use of our facilities is a safe and enjoyable one.

Safeguarding Agreement for Hirers

Parking

Please be aware, when visiting the Sports Centre customers are advised to park along Ashton Road or use the the car park adjacent to the tennis courts on Kennedy Road. They should then enter the School through the pedestrian gate. The code for this gate and the car park gate can be obtained from the Sports Facilities Department.

When visiting the GMR Cricket Centre or synthetic pitches, customers are advised to enter the site via the Porthill Gate. They should then use the car park on the right hand side as they enter the site.

All visitors must observe the 15mph maximum speed limit and be aware that pedestrians have priority across all areas of the site.

First Aid Provision

A designated First Aider must be present for all pre-booked sessions. Users are asked to provide a full first aid kit and update Shrewsbury School of any incidents that may occur whilst on the Shrewsbury School site.
If an incident does occur, additional first aid kits and Automatic Electronic Defibrillators (AED) are located at the marked zones (please see map below). Please do feel free to use the equipment provided.

Shrewsbury School do have a number of staff who are first aid trained. Please notify the on-duty First Aider if any assistance is required.

As the site is large, it can sometimes be difficult for an ambulance to locate the area where its help is required. If you require an ambulance for a medical emergency, dial 999 and provide the information below for directions:

Fire Regulations

Upon arrival, please take time to familiarise yourself with the fire safety procedures, fire exits and assembly points for the facility you are using.

If you discover a fire whilst you are in a building:

  • Leave the building. If practical, make sure that doors and windows to the room where the fire is discovered are closed.
  • On your way out, break the glass of a fire alarm point (red glass fronted
  • boxes, usually at final exit doors).
  • Illuminated green signs mark all fire exits.
  • Warning – only tackle a fire with an extinguisher if it is safe to do so. Do not place yourself at any risk.
  • Assemble outside the building at a safe distance and await further instructions.Take a roll call of all members of your party.
  • Call the Fire Brigade on 999 (first pressing 1 if using a school phone) and give the name of the building.
  • Do not attempt to re-enter the building.

If you hear the fire alarm:

  • The fire alarm is a continuous sounding of bells or sirens.
  • If practical, close doors and windows as you leave.
  • Leave the building and assemble at the nearest assembly point.
  • Do not stop to collect personal belongings.
  • Do not use the lift; it could stop without warning between floors. If you are unable to use the stairs, move to the top of a staircase and ask for someone to inform the Fire Service that you are awaiting rescue.
  • Assemble outside the building at a safe distance and await further instructions.
  • Do not attempt to re-enter the building.

Site Usage Guidance

All visitors are asked to be considerate to the School and pupils' needs. The Sports Facilities Department has configured an appropriate timetable for all external use. Sports facilities users are asked to follow the agreed times and are reminded that other areas of the School are out of bounds.

  • Shrewsbury School is a non-smoking site.
  • Prior to use, an approved booking must be made via the Sports Facilities Department.
  • Appropriate equipment and clothing should be worn at all times.
  • Illuminated green signs mark all fire exits.
  • Please use car parking areas highlighted on the site map. Due to site activities, Swimming Academy Members are asked to park along Ashton Road or use the car park adjacent to the tennis courts on Kennedy Road.
  • To keep the site tidy, all litter should be placed in the bins provided.
  • Alcohol should not be consumed in school grounds.
  • To maintain the high standard of pitches, please avoid walking on grassed areas and use the footpaths provided.
  • All visitors to Shrewsbury School are expected to use a ‘common sense’ approach at all times with regards to their own safety and that of others on the site.
  • Bicycles may be used on site; they should be kept to the tarmac areas.
  • The MAX speed limit is 15mph – pedestrians always have priority.
  • The School will not be held responsible for any loss or damage to personal belongings.
  • No disruptive, offensive or abusive behaviour will be tolerated.
  • Children should be supervised at all times.
  • No pets are allowed on to the School site.

Squash Centre

We ask that all members are aware of the following:

  • Please ensure that all footwear is clean and have non-marking soles.(No outdoor footwear to be worn.)
  • No chewing gum, food and drinks (excluding water and sports drinks).
  • Please ensure that you do not leave valuables in the Changing Rooms. Shrewsbury School will not accept any liability for items left in the Changing Rooms.
  • Please ensure that your session starts and finishes on time.
  • Shrewsbury School operates an access control system where access to the facility is granted via the use of an electronic swipe card. Should you experience any issues with your card, please contact a member of the Sports Facilities Department.
  • Bookings are placed via an online booking portal (mycourts).
  • All members when joining the club will be emailed log in details. Please ensure all court bookings are placed via this system to prevent any double bookings.

Swimming Pool

Please ensure that all members of your group are aware of the following:

  • No running, bombing or acrobatics, which may endanger other pool users.
  • No lilos or inflatables are permitted in the pool.
  • No diving in water less than 1.5metres in depth.
  • No fighting, swearing or spitting.
  • No resting on lane ropes.
  • No outdoor footwear on the poolside.
  • No t-shirts to be worn in the water.
  • No snorkels/face masks/flippers to be used in public sessions.
  • No individual is allowed poolside unless a lifeguard is present.
  • All users are asked to shower prior to using the pool.
  • Users are reminded to swim within their abilities and not out of their depths.

Shrewsbury School, through its lifeguards, reserves the right to refuse anyone admission to the pool area or request any person to leave the premises.

Shrewsbury  School will not accept responsibility or liability for money, clothing and articles left at the owner's risk.


Sports Hall

Please ensure that all members of your group are aware of the following:

  • Clean indoor trainers are to be worn (non-marking soles).
  • Wear appropriate sports clothing suitable for the sport performed.
  • No chewing gum, food and drinks (excluding water and sports drinks).
  • A staff or approved club member must be present at all times.
  • Only qualified staff and coaches should move equipment.
  • Coaches are encouraged to check the facility/ equipment prior to use. Coaches are encouraged to seek assistance if any equipment is required (including the set up and clearing away process). Leisure assistants are available for assistance and are based in the Sports Facilitates Office.
  • Hirers of the facility must provide a designated First Aider and any required first aid equipment in line with NGB guidelines.
  • Terms and conditions for external usage are set out on the booking form and are to be adhered to.

Cricket Centre

Please ensure that all members of your group are aware of the following:

  • Affiliated membership including facility induction is required by all users prior to hiring the facility.
  • Please ensure that all footwear is clean and appropriate (no spikes). Footwear used to get to the Cricket Centre should not be worn in the cricket hall.
  • No chewing gum, food and drinks (excluding water and sports drinks).
  • Please ensure that you do not leave valuables in the Changing Rooms. Shrewsbury School will not accept any liability for items left in the Changing Rooms or the playing area.
  • Please ensure that your session starts and finishes on time.
  • There must always be a current qualified First Aider present, who should have a mobile phone with them at all times.
  • You will need to provide your own cricket balls if just hiring the nets.
  • Balls are provided for use with the bowling machines.
  • Only qualified staff and coaches may move and use specialist equipment; copies of qualification and insurance are required prior to use.

Synthetic Pitches

Please ensure that all members of your group are aware of the following:

  • Wear appropriate sports clothing (including gum-shield and shin pads).
  • Only clean approved artificial pitch footwear to be worn (no studs or blades).
  • No smoking or naked flames.
  • No chewing gum, food and drinks (excluding water and sports drinks).
  • No animals allowed.
  • No vehicles (other than approved maintenance / emergency services).
  • Only qualified staff and coaches will move equipment.
  • A member of staff or approved club member must be present at all times.
  • Terms and conditions for external usage are set out on the booking form and are to be adhered to.
  • Coaches are encouraged to check the facility prior to use.  Four coaches/staff members are required to move the hockey goals.
  • Hirers of the facility must provide a designated First Aider and any required first aid equipment in line with NGB guidelines.
  • Users are asked to park in the Porthill car park; please see site map for details.
  • Spectators are advised to use the spectator areas, but this is at their own risk.

Yale Boathouse

Please ensure that all members of your group are aware of the following:

  • Wear appropriate sports clothing suitable for the activity performed.
  • Do not enter the water of the indoor rowing tank.
  • Please ensure no fluids are emptied into the water of the indoor rowing tank.
  • No chewing gum, food and drinks (excluding water).
  • A qualified coach or approved club member must be present at all times.
  • Terms and conditions for external usage are set out on the booking form and are to be adhered to.
  • Hirers of the facility must provide a designated First Aider and any required first aid equipment in line with NGB guidelines.
  • All equipment should be checked prior to and following use to ensure it is in correct working order.
  • All equipment should be returned to its correct place following use.
