Hope Simpson Ergo Competition - The loudest event in the school calendar!
The annual Hope Simpson Ergo competition took place on Monday evening in the Sport Hall. The loudest event on the school calendar did not disappoint!
The Sports Hall came to life with energy and the house spirit on display.
All thirteen houses produced teams of four for each year group with a total of two hundred and sixty pupils taking part along with many in support. The races take place by year group with the boys and girls events run at the same time. The 3rd 4th and 5th Form cover 2000m and 1750m respectively for the boys and girls. The Upper and Lower Sixth compete over 3000m and 2500m.
The tension mounted for the Third form event not least helped by a technical error on the first attempted start and a false start on the second attempt. Fortunately, third time lucky as the race got underway. Strong performances by Radbrook and EDH saw them break clear of the chasing pack to win the boys and girls events respectively. Less than a second separated second and third place on the boys side with Rigg’s pipping Oldham's for silver.
In the Fourth form event it came down to the line in the boys event with Radbrook just holding off Oldham’s and Porthill in the final strokes to take a second win with less than three seconds splitting the medals. On the girl’s side Mosers held off the challenge for gold with EDH and Grove finishing less than a second apart.
The Fifth form race saw Grove take an impressive win in the girl’s event. In the boy’s event the lead changed on many occasions with Radbrook and Oldham’s going head to head. In the closing stages Oldham’s broke free to take the win only a few seconds shy of the previous record.
The Lower Sixth race saw some more tight margins separating the medals with Radbrook and Grove taking the win.
The Upper Sixth saw a two horse race in both the boys and girls events with School House and Churchill’s, and Grove and EDH changing the lead multiple times throughout the race. Coming in to the final two hundred meters there was nothing to separate the two sets of crews. The timing of the changes had an impact and School House and EDH pulled clear in the to take the wins.
