Issy Wong makes England Test Cricket Debut
Congratulations to Old Salopian Issy Wong (G, 2015-2020) who this week made her debut for the England Women’s Test Cricket Team.
The squad went head to head against South Africa in the LV= Insurance Women’s Test at Taunton.
The fast bowler gained her maiden wicket in only her second over by bowling Laura Wolvaardt, before taking an impressive catch and picking up two wickets in a late-evening spell on the third day.
Issy was presented with her England Test cap at the end of the first day by English cricketer Katherine Brunt, with a speech mentioning our Master I/C of Cricket, Andy Barnard, who retires this summer.
Head of Girls’ Cricket and Issy’s Central Sparks teammate, Gwen Davies, said: “Monday was an incredibly proud day for us all at Shrewsbury. It is something Issy has worked incredibly hard towards, and to finally get her chance was fantastic to see.
I’d like to thank Katherine Brunt for thinking of the school and Andy Barnard in her cap presentation, it was the perfect occasion to mark the end of Andy’s tenure at the school.
“We hope that this is just the beginning of a very long career on the biggest stage for Issy.”
