Old Salopians

The remains of Old Salopian Andrew ‘Sandy’ Irvine are believed to have been found, according to the National Geographic.

In an article released today (Friday), the National Geographic reported that Irvine’s remains have been found 100 years after the mountaineer vanished alongside George Mallory as they attempted the 1924 Everest expedition.

Sandy Irvine was educated at Shrewsbury School from 1916-21 and was the main focus of an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) undertaken by Sixth Form pupil Archie P-S (SH, UVI) earlier this year.

The Everest 1924 Centenary Commemoration welcomed some of the most prominent names in Mountaineering to Shrewsbury to reflect on Irvine’s expedition, asking the question of whether the pair made it to the top.

The latest discovery on the Central Rongbuk Glacier below the north face of Everest may help answer questions about Irvine and Mallory's expedition.

You can read more about the discovery here, and look back at an incredibly interesting evening of speakers at the school’s Centenary Commemoration here.
