Shrewsbury’s CCF Royal Marine Section attended the Sir Steuart Pringle Trophy Competition last weekend and achieved a podium position at this prestigious cadet skills event.

The keenly awaited competition takes place at the Commando Training Centre Royal Marines (CTCRM). The event allows teams of eight cadets to compete against other schools at this famous training establishment which has significant training estate on the River Exe estuary and inland at Woodbury Common training area. The famed high rope confidence course, obstacle course and endurance course route (featuring the infamous ‘sheep dip’ obstacle) are well known among military circles and our Salopian cadets had worked very hard to train for this event.

Coming third out of twenty schools, our Team Captain Cpl Jonty S (O, LVI) said: "I want to say thank you to the eight other lads who put in so much effort over the past months with training and preparation.

"Thanks to this effort put in we managed to secure a solid third position and had the achievement of winning the section attack trophy on the first day. The competition consisted of many different stands that tested our skills and knowledge; including first aid, shooting, fieldcraft and leadership tasks. The final day culminated with the infamous endurance course followed by drill.

"Huge thanks to all the staff who supported the team especially Capt. Till, Lt Col. David, RSM Potts and Major Copsey.  Well done team you should be proud or your achievements!"

Head of CCF Lt Col Nick David added: "The Pringle Competition gives cadets in our RM section a clear focus. I have huge admiration for the self-starting nature of the individuals as nearly all the training for the event is organised by the pupils themselves. The team can be spotted practising early mornings and late evenings – this surely is self-leadership at its very best."

For his exceptional leadership of the Shrewsbury CCF Royal Marine Sir Steuart Pringle Trophy Team Cpl Jonty S has been awarded a Floreat.
