Lower School pupils enjoy jam-packed Activities Week
Activities Week has become a highlight of the Shrewsbury School summer calendar, offering Third and Fourth Form students an exhilarating week packed with adventure, challenges, and unforgettable experiences.
This unique week allows pupils to step out of their comfort zones and dive into a myriad of new activities.
Third Form Thrills
The Third Form embarked on a rotation of three thrilling activities throughout the week. The Shrewsbury Mountain Marathon, a multi-day orienteering event on the picturesque Long Mynd, was a standout. Students put their Thursday afternoon BASE programme skills to the test, camping overnight and embracing the great outdoors in a true test of endurance and teamwork.
A fresh addition this year, Nature Day, brought students back to basics on-site. Pupils rolled up their sleeves in the Pollinators Garden, clearing weeds and constructing a new willow fence. They also enjoyed kick sampling in a local stream, cooking on a fire pit, and measuring biodiversity in the wildflower meadow. With journals in hand, students captured their observations and reflections, guided by the mantra "I notice, I wonder, it reminds me of."
The week culminated in a fiercely competitive day at Packwood Haugh. Divided into groups, pupils navigated six different stands, amassing points in a spirited contest that engaged both students and staff.
Fourth Form Adventures
The Fourth Form's week was equally diverse and action-packed. It kicked off with a Careers Day hosted by the Futures Department and concluded with a Personal Social and Development Day. In between, pupils continued their Thursday afternoon pursuits, engaging in a range of activities from the Combined Cadet Force (CCF) and Adventure Society.
The CCF and Adventure Society participants took on challenges like climbing, abseiling, caving, sailing, stand-up paddleboarding, improvised raft building, and even summiting Blencathra in the stunning Lake District. Meanwhile, Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award candidates ventured to the Ceiriog Valley, navigating between campsites, cooking their own meals and sleeping under the stars over three adventurous days. The volunteering group made a significant impact in local primary schools, working in small teams to clear out store cupboards, assist as teaching assistants, support early years with reading, paint fences, and even help with lunch duties.
A huge thank you goes out to all the staff who made this incredible week possible, and a hearty congratulations to all the pupils for embracing the amazing opportunities on offer. Activities Week at Shrewsbury School truly showcases the spirit of adventure and community that defines our school.
