Awards for MUN delegates at Cheadle Hulme Conference
Last weekend Shrewsbury School’s Model United Nations (MUN) team returned to the annual Cheadle Hulme School MUN Conference.
This time round, we were representing the USA, Israel and Venezuela debating an expansive range of topics relevant to our global world; from the refugee crisis in Afghanistan to childhood obesity to under-sea fibre optic cables. This year, the team improved from last year's performance, where they secured five individual awards, culminating in a total of seven individual and one team award.
The USA delegation—comprised of Matthew W (SH, LVI), Jade C-M (MSH, UVI), George R (SH, LVI), Chloe L (MSH, LVI), Elsa L (M, V), and Will O (CH, LVI)—earned the Highly Commended Delegation award thanks to a consistently strong performance across all members in their respective committees.
Individually, mirroring our excellent team performance, the Shrewsbury team secured a haul of seven individual awards. Jade C-M (MSH, UVI) received the ‘Highly Commended Delegate’ award in the Human Rights Council, as well as the Non-Native English Speaker's Best Delegate Special Award for the entire conference.
We also had five commended delegates which were: Matthew W (SH, LVI) in the Human Rights Committee, George R (SH, LVI) in the Security Council, Will O (CH, LVI) in the Historical Committee, Dason T (RT, LVI) in the Justice Council and Elsa L (M, V) in the Youth Committee.
Special mention goes to Alanood A (M, LVI), Harry P (S, LVI), Jasper H (R, LVI), Kouki H (I, LVI), Jayden Lai (SH, LVI), Eddie S (SH, LVI), Sara W (M, IV) and Damla B (M, IV) for their excellent debuts with the Shrewsbury MUN team.
Head of MUN George R as well as Deputy Heads Jade C-M and Matthew W commented: “We all worked very well in our committees and then collaborated together in GA to create effective debate. It was absolutely brilliant to see all the spectacular debating by my fellow delegates and we are thankful to Cheadle for an excellent conference. It was great to improve from last year’s performance which demonstrates how the debating quality at Shrewsbury is only moving from strength to strength.”
Thanks must be given to Miss von Kuk, Head of MUN, who has sacrificed much of her time to help organise our team for this conference as well as Miss Stockburn who gave up her time this weekend to accompany us to Cheadle. Their hard work is appreciated by all of us at the ShrewsMUN team.
