Shrewsbury celebrates World Book Day with creative House bake off

In true Salopian spirit Shrewsbury School embraced World Book Day this week with a House Book Bake off.
It was wonderful to see the Houses’ creativity with the challenge and the conversations the event created amongst the students was marvellous to hear. We were delighted to receive 15 entries and the judging was taken extremely seriously, with points awarded for skill, technique, taste and creativity.
The prize winners were as follows:
Third Place: Ridgemount, The Gruffalo
This had an exceptional chocolate flavour. Upon closer inspection, the inventive use of multiple forms of chocolate and fondant revealed this to be a Cubist masterpiece.
Second Place: MSH, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
The decoration of this cake was exceptional, with a chocolate river, lollipop trees, oompa loompas and outstanding fondant craft. There was a very pleasing ratio of icing to sponge. Overall, this was ever so slightly over baked, which prevented it from reaching the top spot.
First Place: Riggs, The Stick Man
A velvety smooth filling on a crunchy base with some complex flavour notes (salt? Banana?) - this was delicious. Decoration using Twirls and Flakes was simple but effective. The judging team described this unanimously as 'divine', and it was declared the clear winner before one of the judges attempted to walk off with it.
Well done to all who took part!
