Open air theatre returns to Shropshire

Robin Case (Staff 1980 to 2013) and Tim Ashton (S, 200-2005) have teamed up to continue the tradition of open-air theatre at Soulton Hall, the Ashton family estate.

During the first lockdown, Tim Ashton built a theatre on the estate to help struggling theatre companies and struggling actors (see The Salopian, Winter 2020, pp 76,77). After a successful 2020, the new season at Soulton Hall opens with Classic Theatre Company’s Relatively Speaking, Alan Ayckbourn’s witty garden comedy, directed by Robin Case.

Classic Theatre Company is a small group of actors, drawn from all over the country, and dedicated to the high-quality performance of popular but well-respected drama. And Relatively Speaking is no exception.

Apart from the first scene, the play is set in a garden, so what better setting than the walled garden at Soulton? The play opens in Ginny and Greg’s tiny London bedsit. But why are there so many flowers, and whose slippers are under the bed? Meanwhile at their house Buckinghamshire, Philip is wondering why the post arrives on Sunday, and why his wife isn’t going to church today.

We hope that as many Salopians as possible will support Tim and Robin’s initiative to help actors as they emerge from lockdown and swell the audience at Soulton for performances at 2.00pm and 6.00pm on Thurs 20, Fri 21, Sat 22, and Sun 23 May.
