Shrewsbury
Arthur Dunn Final 29th May 2021
Salopians went into the final brimming with confidence.
Coming off the back of a magnificent semi-final victory (3-2) vs Kings College Wimbledon, Salopians went into the final brimming with confidence. A real club day out with a coach full of fans departing Clapham Junction. Special thanks to the Old Salopian Club for generously funding the coach.
May bank holiday weekend pulled out all the stops with the weather setting up a fantastic day out for all involved. Captain Ollie Brown selected a very strong side consisting of three university students (Toby Pegge, Dan Humes and George Pearce).
The match started in possibly the worst possible way 10 minutes in. Salopians tried playing out from the back, with a pass intercepted and capitalised on by the front three of Forest. 1-0 down. A first half to forget as Forest put two more past the stunned Salopian outfit. 3-0 HT.
A Rafa Benítez inspired team talk kicked the team into gear. The team had more energy, better decision making and were so much braver on the ball. Momentum is a funny thing in football and somehow, two penalties later (both converted by Raul Alexis) we were back in it with 25 minutes left! 3-2!
With newly invigorated confidence it would have to take something special to stop the Salopians from coming back and that’s what sadly happened. A wonderful strike from outside the box all but confirmed victory with 10 minutes to play. 4-2. A valiant effort and one that sets up the club for next season where we hope to be promoted back into the top division. The team exceeded expectations this year in the cup and the team although disappointed, can take great pride in their achievements.
