For its fifth meeting following the end of lockdown, the SDC gathered at the Silverstone Classic last Sunday, 1st August. The weather for the first half of the day was appalling but a dozen members and their guests braved the rain and cold.
Those that made it were David Kempton and guest, Peter Hunter with Hugo and David Hunter,
Chris Kettle and guest, Alex Aldous, William Cumbrinck, Andrew Humpish, Dan Legge and Miles Preston and guest. (I apologise if I have missed anyone out).
The racing went ahead despite the rain and spray for the first two of the five races. This was the 30th Anniversary of the Classic and the 60th Anniversary of commencement of production of the magnificent E Type Jaguar and was marked by a dramatic race of these instantly recognisable cars.
Fortunately, by about 2.30pm the weather cleared up and the second half of the day’s racing took place in dry and increasingly fine conditions. Notwithstanding the initially poor weather, everyone who turned up thoroughly enjoyed their day.
Next Wednesday, 11th August and Thursday, 12th at 8pm both evenings, there will be two programmes on ITV 4 showing the racing from the Silverstone Classic. You may enjoy watching these.
The Club’s next meeting will be over the weekend of 9th/10th October at Shrewsbury. This is the weekend of Salopian Day. There will be the now well established gathering of cars on Central at 11.45, followed by lunch at 12.30 and our AGM at 2.15. We will be gathering for dinner in Kingsland Hall in the evening (lounge suits not black tie this year) and the following morning will be touring together for a couple of hours, culminating in lunch together.
We very much hope to see as many of you as possible in October.

Chairman, Salopian Drivers Club
