Explorer Sir David Hempleman-Adams gives inspiring talk to Salopians
Harry C-W (O, LVI) reflects on the explorer's inspirational talk.
On Thursday evening Shrewsbury School was honoured to receive a visit from one of the world’s greatest living explorers Sir David Hempleman - Adams.
Sir David will be leading an expedition in March 2022 to cross Baffin Island in the high Canadian Arctic. The expedition team will include Salopian Harry C-W (O, LVI) and Old Salopians Tim CW (O, 2021) and Joe S (O, 2019) who will attempt to journey from the East coast of Baffin to the West coast unsupported, via the Akshayuk Pass, a distance of about 100 miles. They will be pulling all their kit on sledges in temperatures as low as -40C and plan to use a combination of skis, crampons and Nordic Alpha boots to traverse the terrain which will vary from rocks to snow to the bed of a frozen river. Geography A Level student Harry will also get an opportunity to witness first hand the effects of climate change on the Baffin glaciers.
Whilst here, Sir David treated us to an entertaining and inspiring lecture on some of the exploits of his extraordinary life, as well as at the end answering some excellent questions from the audience!
