A Shrewsbury School teacher has been recognised as an ‘Outstanding Educator’ by the University of Chicago.

Morgan Bird, Housemaster of School House and teacher of Philosophy and Theology, received the accolade from the University of Chicago after being nominated by former pupil Jakin Wong (SH, 2018-23).

Mr Bird has been recognised for his ‘excellence in teaching and mentorship’, with Jakin adding that his teacher “challenged him intellectually for the first time, opened new vistas of discovery, and channelled their private interests into paths for intellectual growth.”

“Regardless of the award, it feels great and is really wonderful that Jakin took the time to nominate me and show his appreciation,” said Mr Bird.

“To be fair to Jakin, much of his success is his own as he has been one of the most rewarding pupils that I have taught. When pupils show tremendous character alongside their academics, I think it lets the teachers know that we are doing something right.”

Mr Bird is the second member of the Philosophy and Theology faculty at Shrewsbury to receive an education award from an American university, following Head of PT Mr Tonks being named as a Morehead-Cain Impact Educator by the University of North Carolina following a nomination from a former pupil earlier this year.
