Shrewsbury students are celebrating another successful MUN conference.

On the 25th of November, Mr Oakley and Miss von Kuk took seven highly motivated delegates representing China and Iran and two guest chairs to the third annual Queen’s School Chester’s MUN Conference.

The students gave up their well-deserved Coach Weekend to debate issues such as the use of deep fakes in election campaigns, energy security and the ethics of energy procurements, the use of Ozempic for weight loss, and the rights of asylum seekers in the developed world. The discussions were passionate, sometimes heated, but always constructive.

Miss von Kuk, teacher in charge of MUN, said: “It was wonderful to see our students engaging with such important topics and framing their arguments with eloquence while empathising with other countries. Jade C (MSH, LVI) (Iran, Political Committee) and Chelsey D (MSH, V) (China, Security Council) were highly commended for their meaningful contributions to the debate. Matthew W (SH, V) (China, Political Committee) won outstanding delegate for his witty and sophisticated debating style.

Matthew W said: “There was a lively and impassioned debate from all, providing pupils with a platform to analyse, critically think and develop confidence. Participating in QMUN was an enriching and interesting experience that allowed us to develop our intellectual skills. The debate was thought-provoking and especially engaging. I was honoured to be awarded the 'outstanding delegate' award.

“Overall, it was a very successful and interesting conference, and we would like to thank Ms. Von Kuk and Dr. Oakley for taking us there and their meticulous support and the MUN committee at the Queen's School for their hard work in organising this conference.”
