We were absolutely delighted to hear that Joss Gowar (S, 2023) was last week awarded the highly prestigious Morehead Cain scholarship to the University of North Carolina.

Selection is based on the four strands of scholarship, leadership, character and physical vigour; the process is very competitive, with only 3% of applicants being chosen each year. Joss will join fellow OS Finn Sansom as a Morehead Cain scholar, who started at UNC in 2022, following in the footsteps of an eminent list of Salopians to receive the scholarship.

The first and oldest merit-based scholarship to an American university or college, the programme covers the full cost of tuition, board and lodging, as well as access to an inspiring community of Morehead Cain scholars and an incredibly exciting enrichment programme of extra-curricular activities and internships.

Toby Percival, Head of Higher Education, said: “Everyone who encountered Joss over his five years at Shrewsbury will view him as the worthiest of recipients of the Morehead Cain scholarship; he embodied the values we would hope a Salopian to have, impressing in every area of school life.  His understated service leadership, willingness to throw himself fully into a panoply of activities and determination to make the world around him better, made him the natural recipient of the Salopian Award last year.  These values align closely to those held by the Morehead Cain team and I am sure that he will soar still higher as he embarks on an exciting next adventure.”

We look forward to hearing from Joss in the coming weeks about his thoughts on becoming a Morehead Cain scholar.
