Shrewsbury
Courageous Effort by OS Golfers in the Halford Hewitt
As expected the 2020 Halford Hewitt was cancelled and April 2021 was moved forward to September.
Once again we were drawn against the same team who beat us in the first round in 2019, Whitgift. This year their combined handicaps for ten players totalled plus 2!!
We had debutants Stefan Hindmarsh and Seb Marsh paired with the experienced Campion brothers. Although we were missing a couple of players, our regular top pair of Jon Howse and Richard Roberts played against a pair (one of whom was plus 6) and won on the eighteenth. Our second pair, Jonty Campion and debutant Stefan Hindmarsh, cruised home 4 and 3 playing some excellent golf. Third pair Alex Stewart and James Mainwaring, who play together at Royal Mid Surrey, won on the 20th. Will Campion and debutant Seb Marsh were waiting to play their second shots onto the 20th when fifth pair, President Will Painter and captain Andy Pollock, giving 68 years in combined handicaps, won on the 19th. Shrewsbury beating Whitgift 4.5 to .5 was the talk of the Hewitt!!
In the second round we played Sherborne and with the match poised at two games each, fourth pair Will Campion and Seb Marsh lost on the eighteenth. Sherborne went on to beat Malvern, Tonbridge and Rossal before losing to Loretto in the final. Nothing to be ashamed of for the Salopians.
