Shrewsbury
Commonwealth call-ups and Personal bests - Shrewsbury Athletes' achievements so far
It’s been a stellar start to the Athletics Season, with several of our athletes achieving some incredible results and opportunities.
Jack K (PH, V) has been announced in the Isle of Man Athletics Squad for the Youth Commonwealth Games, being held in Trinidad and Tobago this August. An outstanding achievement and opportunity for him.
Jack said: ‘I'm excited to represent the Isle of Man at the U18 Commonwealth Games this August in Trinidad and Tobago. I am running in the 800m and I am training hard in hope of winning the first ever Gold Medal for the Isle of Man.’
Following Jack’s selection, he and Iris D (G, UVI) have been invited to race in the 800m Young Athletes Race this Saturday 20th May. This aim of this event is to help athletes gain (if they haven’t done so already!) qualifying times for the European U20 Championships and Youth Commonwealth Games.
This will take place on the Night of the 10km PBs – an annual event at Parliament Hill in London which sees the best in Britain mixing it with some of the top runners on the planet. The event started in 2013 and has evolved to the stage British trials for the Olympics and World Championships. As it grew it began to incorporate the European Cup.
It is an exceptionally exciting night; it will be live streamed from 3pm via YouTube on @on_running @britishathletics and @europeanathetics channels.
Ahead of the event Iris was interviewed by The Big Run Podcast. Iris’ interview will go live on Saturday prior to the start of racing. The Podcast commented on their Twitter....
‘Meet the next generation of talent that will be getting the opportunity to experience an event like no other as part of a special 800m in the Night of the 10km PBs programme. Iris is one to watch after an impressive 2022 which saw her secure a European U18 Bronze Medal. We went to visit her at home during her A Level studies to find out what the opportunity to race at Highgate means and her hopes for the future of sport.’
You will be able to watch Jack race in the 800m U17 Men’s race at 8.10pm, and Iris in the 800m U20 women’s race at 8.20pm on Saturday, May 20th.
Elsewhere our athletes have also been recording some personal bests in competitions - Zac W (Rb, IV) recorded a new PB at the Shrewsbury Point to Point in an exceptionally quick time of 36.07.
George H (O,UVI) competed at the Gloucestershire County Championships in the 800m and High Jump on the 29th of April. George finished 1st in the High Jump with a PB of 1.87! Very close to the English School Qualifying Standard.
Congratulations to all our athletes on such impressive results.
