The Athletics season is in full swing at Shrewsbury; here is a round up of competitions and results so far.

Achilles Relays, Thursday 4th May

On Thursday 4th May 21 students travelled to the Oxford for the Achilles Schools’ Relays held at Iffley Road – home of where Sir Roger Bannister broke the 4-minute mile on the 6th of May 1954. An historic venue and competition, competing against other outstanding schools.

The Achilles Club is the Athletics Club for current and former Oxford University and Cambridge University students. The Achilles Schools’ Relays were started in 1963 and performances in the meeting over the years have gained high ranking in the all-time best performance for their age group.

Last year Shrewsbury won their first ever trophy at this event, The Christopher Brasher Trophy for the U17 Boys 4 x 400m – this year the athletes went one better and brought two trophies back to The Schools! A record result for the school and something that has never been achieved before by Shrewsbury athletes.

Special mention to a girl's squad who doubled up and ran in numerous races to ensure we fulfilled our usual entries. Including Georgia G (MSH, III) who ran the 400m and 800m as part of the Open Women’s – a fantastic effort!

U17 Boys 4 x 400m – The Christopher Brasher Trophy

Bringing this trophy home for the second year running – Fifth Formers Jack K (PH), Daniel O (Rt), Max L (R) and Harry P-M (I) were triumph, beating Oakham, American School, Brighton, Rugby School and Highgate. In a winning time of 3.39.2 – a second quicker than last year!

Open Boys 4 x 400m – The Lord Noel-Baker Trophy

A first in Shrewsbury history our 4 x 400m Boys won The Lord Noel-Baker Trophy. The team consisted of Jack K (PH), Kristian T (I, UVI), Brad K (R, LVI) and Will S (R, UVI) in a winning time of 7.59.5. Will S had the quickest lap in a time of 1.55.20, which puts him just inside the UK top 6 this year!

Congratulations to all who competed!

Coronation Celebration, Saturday 6th May
