On Monday, 3rd February, the Girls' 1st XI hockey team displayed incredible determination and teamwork at the National Hockey Finals held in Nottingham. Despite finishing in 6th place, the team's spirit, effort, and unity were truly inspiring throughout the tournament.
Qualifying for the finals by winning the Midlands (Regional round) during the Michaelmas term was no small feat, and the team faced tough competition in their pool matches. Their first game was against Bishops Stortford, where despite dominating possession and territory, the team lost 2-0. The score line did not reflect their hard work and the relentless effort they put in, with the match being tied 0-0 at half time.
In the second game against Kirkby Stephen Grammar School, the team once again showed their resilience, though they ended with a 2-0 loss. The opposition had two very skilful players, but the Girls' 1st XI remained competitive throughout, fighting hard until the final whistle.
The third pool game against Reading Bluecoat School saw the team achieve a well-deserved 2-1 victory. They were 2-0 up, but a goal conceded in the second half led to a tense finish. This win placed them 3rd in their pool, setting the stage for a match against the 3rd place team from Pool Two for the 5th and 6th place finish.
In the final match against Hereford Cathedral School. Despite their valiant efforts, they narrowly lost 1-0. Each match was a testament to their hard work, dedication, and unbreakable team spirit.
Special recognition goes to 'Ralpsie,' our devoted hockey coach, and to the senior players, including Captain Sofia C (MSH, UVI) and Vice-Captains Gabby B (QEH, UVI) and Catty C (MSH, UVI), for their leadership both on and off the pitch. Their guidance and support were instrumental in the team's journey. As we bid farewell to 8 of the squad's 16 players this year, we are confident that the future of Girls' hockey is bright with many talented young players rising through the ranks.
The Girls' 1st XI team's performance at the National Hockey Finals is a proud moment for the club, highlighting the power of effort, teamwork and unwavering spirit. Here's to more successes in the future!
