And they're off... US University Sports Scholarship signings
With the ink still drying on their applications, this week saw two of the Upper Sixth commit to their US university sport scholarships on 'signing day'.
Tara L (M) will be joining Boston University's Rowing crew, known as the Terriers, where she'll share the Charles River with OS Nat T, who is at Harvard. Boston is a member of the American Association of Universities, a collection of 71 prestigious research universities in the US, and its campus stretches alongside Boston's riverbanks; Tara will majoring in the Sargent College of Health and Rehabilitation.
Jack K (SH) will be joining the University of Maryland's track squad next year. A member of the competitive Big Ten athletic conference, the university's campus lies in the aptly named College Park, just north of Washington DC; Jack will hopefully major in the Smith School of Business.
Tara said: “I feel really lucky to have been awarded a rowing scholarship to Boston University. I am looking forward to rowing on the Charles, immersing myself in the amazing team culture and taking advantage of all the academic opportunities. I am also really excited to explore the vibrant city of Boston!
“All the staff at Shrewsbury have really helped me to make the best decision when deciding on which university to go to. In particular, the Futures Team and my rowing coaches who have supported me all the way through my time here.
Jack added: “I recently received a scholarship to run Division 1 Track and Field at the University of Maryland. The school has been influential in getting me to this point and I am so excited to have this incredible opportunity to take my running to the highest level possible.”
Head of Sixth Form Toby Percival said: "We are absolutely thrilled that Tara and Jack have received such generous scholarships to two tremendous universities, where they will be able to develop their athletic careers alongside strong academic credentials.
“Both have excelled in their respective sports during their time at Shrewsbury and can be justly proud of their achievement. The sports scholarship process continues for the Upper Sixth, as some universities and colleges wait until the end of their seasons before making decisions.
“In equal measure, it has been lovely to see offers start coming in for our UK applicants, whose process is in full flow.”
