Multiple celebrations on OS Day 2024
Around 300 Old Salopians aged from 20 to 89 returned to School on Saturday 14th September for Old Salopian Day.
The weather was kind which made a difference especially to a flag raising ceremony in honour of Ken Spiby and Robin Moulsdale. Ken Spiby was Head Groundsmen between 1957 and 1994. Robin Moulsdale was an Old Salopian (I 1942-46) and a Housemaster and teacher (1951-81) An outstanding all round sportsman he was the no 1 fives player in the world for many years. It's appropriate that the flags now flutter in full view of top common, particularly the cricket square which was Ken's pride and joy. His wife Vera, who turns 90 at the end of September, his two sons and grandchildren were all hand for the ceremony.
The OSFC vs School fixture was played on Old Salopian Day for the first time in five years. The OSFC fielded four teams and were well supported by several generations on the touchline.
There were two interesting and contrasting talks from School Archivist Robin Brooke-Smith (S 1961-66) about Irvine's attempt on Everest and Christopher Hope (O 1985-90) about his career as a political journalist, a poignant unveiling of a restored war memorial in Churchill's and the unveiling of a portrait of much loved rowing coach and housemaster Peter Gladstone (staff 1952-71) in the Boathouse by his widow Jeannie. Several members of Peter's 1960/61 crews returned for the event including two who travelled from America and one from Belgium.
The day was rounded off with a lively dinner and a fitting celebration of Robin Trimby's 90th birthday including touching tributes from Peter Worth and current President Ben Duncan.
