The Shrewsbury School Hockey programme has kicked off the term with remarkable enthusiasm and participation, boasting over 100 girls involved in the sport.

This impressive turnout has enabled us to field eight teams this term, significantly enhancing our strength in depth.

Our Girls’ 1st XI team has built on a successful pre-season in Nottingham, where they played eight games in a tournament, winning five, drawing one and losing two. This excellent form has continued into the term, with notable victories against Newport Ladies Hockey Club 1st XI and Bridgnorth Ladies 1st XI, both of whom compete in the Midlands adult leagues.

This rigorous preparation proved invaluable as the team faced Birkenhead School in the first round of the National Cup. Despite Birkenhead featuring several Welsh internationals and club players, our girls demonstrated their class with outstanding pressing structure and fantastic passing.

The match ended in a resounding 6-0 victory, with goals from Amelia B (MSH, LVI), Alice B (EDH, UVI), Gabby B (QEH, UVI), Freya W (EDH, UVI) and Maggie W (G, V).

With the Third Form having completed their Foundation Fortnight, we are now looking forward to all our age groups competing in County Cups, England Hockey knockout competitions, and block fixtures.

Our first block fixture weekend is set for Friday, 27th September, and Saturday, 28th September, with all eight teams in action against Worcester Royal Grammar School. The 1st and 2nd XI will play under the Friday night lights away at Worcester, while the remaining six teams will compete on Saturday afternoon.

We are incredibly proud of the team’s achievements and look forward to more successes as the season progresses.

Liam Hennessy

Assistant Director of Sport
