Pastoral Old Salopians

Churchill’s Hall celebrated its 150th anniversary with a special plaque unveiling.

As part of Old Salopian Day, current and former pupils and staff gathered in the boarding house to unveil their World War One plaque that has been restored to its former glory, which lists the names of Churchill’s Hall boys who fought in the war.

The plaque has been restored with the help of the SSPA and Old Salopians and was a fitting way to celebrate 150 years of the house, which has recently been refurbished.

Housemaster of Churchill's Hall, John Wright said: "As we celebrate 150 years as a house in Shrewsbury School, it is with great pride that with the help of parents and Old Salopians, we have been able to restore this World War One plaque to its former glory.

"The 42 names listed were boys and young men who lived here at Churchill's Hall and are a constant reminder to all of us in the house of the incredible sacrifice and bravery of those who went before us.

"They leave behind them a legacy of courage and integrity that lives on in the boys who call Churchill's Hall home today.

"As the plaque reads, they will always be remembered with gratitude, with affection and with pride."

Director of The Salopian Club, Holly Fitzgerald, added: “The unveiling was a highlight of Old Salopian Day. It was wonderful to welcome so many Churchillians back to the house with ages ranging from 20 to 86. As the Upper Sixth helped serve canapes and chatted with the Old Salopians it was particularly poignant to consider the young men named on the memorial and the price they paid for the freedom of future generations.”
