Salopian secures prestigious engineering scholarship
A Sixth Form pupil has become the first Salopian in 30 years to be awarded the prestigious Arkwright Engineering Scholarship.
Polly H (G, LVI) has successfully secured the scholarship out of a record number of applicants; more than 1,500 students applied for the scholarship, the highest number of applications since the programme began over 30 years ago.
The Arkwright Engineering Scholarship is externally sponsored, with Polly’s scholarship funded by IMI Truflo Marine - a global manufacturer that has been designing and manufacturing high integrity valves, actuators and pressure reducing stations for nuclear and naval marine applications for over 50 years.
An Arkwright Engineering Scholarship is the most esteemed scholarship of its type in the UK, designed to inspire students to pursue their dreams and change the world as an outstanding engineer of the future.
Polly completed a rigorous process including an application form that was assessed, an examination and an interview.
Polly said: “Having applied earlier this year and managing to get through all the stages of the scholarship process, I was promised a scholarship in late June just before school ended. I was then contacted earlier this month and informed of the details of my award.
“I am being sponsored by IMI Truflo Marine who manufacture pump valves for submarines and told that I would be possibly having a mentor on top of this. As part of my scholarship, I have to maintain good contact with my mentor and have the amazing opportunity to attend a welcome day in early November.
“Throughout my application the Design and Technology department helped me through the submission process ensuring I met timeframes as well as introducing me to the Arkwright opportunity in the first place!
“I am very excited to begin my Arkwright journey.”
Design and Technology is a popular subject choice for pupils at Shrewsbury, with 12 pupils in 2024 going on to study Engineering at top universities.
We look forward to seeing Polly embark on her engineering journey.
