An update from Mr Wray on this year’s Darwin Science Competition

The annual Darwin Science Competition ran in remote this term, with on-site plans scuppered by national school closure. It was incredible to see entries from much further afield in the UK than we would normally see join us in person for this competition; 21 teams ultimately entered, making a highly competitive field. The quality of answers across the board was very high and the breadth of knowledge demonstrated was impressive.

Head of Science Outreach, David Wray presented the trophy and winning team's book prize via a video (see below) to all participants earlier this term.

The final rankings were as follows:

  1. Cargilfield School - scoring 85 points out of a possible 104, first place in the Darwin Competition 2020 was awarded to one of two teams from Cargilfield - Venetia, Clemmie, Matthew, and Seb.
  2. The Packwood Haugh - in second place, Johnnie, Ruifu, Gethin and Poppy - a very good effort indeed!
  3. In third place, we had a tie: Cothill House's "Woodpecker" Team made up of Morgan, Johnny, Tom, and Sandy; and Prestfelde School's team of Issie, Marrie, Blaise, and Ryan.

Well done to all participants! In due course, Cargilfield will receive their trophy and a copy of The Science Book for each member of the team.

Thank you to all the teachers who have made this competition possible by running video call quiz sessions with teams up and down the country.
