Lower Sixth Futures Week
The Lent Term for lower sixth form is an exciting period. With students now settled into A Level studies, attention now begins to shift slightly to encourage more serious thoughts about future opportunities.
Throughout this term there will be a range of activities for this year group, varying from university presentations to careers insight talks, as well as virtual house visits to both parents and students. All of these activities are designed to support planning processes at this early stage.
The ‘Futures week’ which commences on Monday 18th January provides students with opportunities to engage in a mixture of activities, some of which are application processes based, whereas others focus more on research and identification of key skills. All will prove useful and we look forward to students benefiting from the range of interactions available.

| Monday 18th January 2021 | P7, 3:15pm | The importance of adaptability – OS Talk, David Moorhouse*. | The ability to adapt within the workplace is crucial as the current pandemic is demonstrating. Old Salopian David Moorhouse (see full bio below) is well placed to talk through this topic and share stories about his wide ranging career, where his ability to respond to change and different challenges has been tested throughout. Students will listen in to a hosted discussion with David and will have the opportunity to pose questions. |
| Tuesday 19th January 2021 | P7, 3.15pm | ShortlistMe Interview | Recruitment processes have changed significantly in the last ten years and in the last twelve months in particular many employers have had to switch to video interviews rather than face to face interactions. The school has invested into some excellent software (ShortlistMe) to aid students with these challenges and lower sixth formers will have the opportunity to respond to competency based questions, self-assess their performance, and receive feedback from the Head of Futures about their interview skills. |
| Wednesday 20th January 2021 | P6, 1.00pm | CV WorkshopDelivered by Dan Miller (Young Professionals) | CVs can take many formats and regardless of age, you never know when you might be asked to produce one! It’s important that by the lower sixth students have their first CV drafted. This workshop will provide the hints and tips to do this effectively. |
| Thursday 21st January 2021 | P6, 1.00pm | Psychometric Testing | Continuing the theme of exposure to recruitment processes, applicants can be often surprised by the range of psychometric testing they are put through by employers in early application stages. Situational judgment tests regularly form part of these assessments and students will be able to take an online test to increase their understanding about what to expect. |
| Friday 22nd January 2021 | P7, 3.15pm | Unifrog Refresher | To conclude the week and with the UCAS week in mind in February 2021, Mr Percival will guide students through some key aspects of Unifrog and host a drop in session for any follow up queries. Unifrog is the main resource students use to support their post 6th form planning and this is an excellent opportunity to continue to explore its’ functions. |
*David Moorhouse was educated at Shrewsbury School and Queens’ College, Cambridge, where he read French and German. After qualifying as a Chartered Accountant with Price Waterhouse, he worked as an investment banker with European Banking Company, concentrating on corporate finance transactions in the US, South America and Asia. In 1984 he joined the executive search firm Russell Reynolds in London where he became a Managing Director specialising in financial recruitment and also became Chief Executive of the firm’s German office. He was appointed Chief Financial Officer of Deltex Medical Ltd in 1996 and became Managing Director, Europe; he managed several rounds of private finance and the company’s public listing in 2002. From 2004 to 2016 he was Head of Finance and Administration at the International Coffee Organization, an intergovernmental entity based in London, where his responsibilities covered finance, relations with bankers, auditors and Member governments in the Americas, Africa, Asia and Europe, and all legal and human resource matters.
