It’s been a busy week for our rowers.

Last Wednesday afternoon the Boat Club held its annual VSW sculling races. Seventy of the clubs’ rowers took part in the event that runs over the 1000m stretch the passes in front of the Boathouse.

The winners of the various age groups were as follows:

  • Williams Cup (J15 1X): Joe D (PH)
  • Fox Trophy (WJ15 1X): Sophie S (M)
  • Sabrina Cup (J16 1X): Tom R (O)
  • Case Cup (WJ16 1X): Katie H (MSH)
  • Victoria Cap (J18 1X): George S (SH)
  • Kitchin Cup: (WJ18 1X) Issy T (MSH)

The winning houses for the fastest combined time of four scullers was The Grove and School House.

On Thursday evening, following the Sponsored Walk, the Boat Club held its annual dinner. The dinner was a great chance to celebrate some of the success of the last year while also looking forward to the season ahead.

One hundred and fifty pupils and staff enjoyed the experience of a great meal and hearing from our outgoing Captain of Boats, Fred Tyler and Natalie Dee and guest speakers, Jamie Copus and Annabel Stevens.

Jamie and Annabel were the winners of the men’s and women’s singles events at this years BUC’s Regatta. Both have medalled internationally for Great Britain, and Jamie is arguably the top lightweight rower in the UK. Jamie won the Scullers Head out of four hundred competitors on the preceding weekend. Jamie and Annabel are not the typical stature of an international GB athlete and have succeeded at such a high level through significant drive and determination. It was wonderful to hear their insight into the grit that one to perform in the sport.

Following the speeches Jamie and Annabel presented the trophies to our VSW winners.

On Sunday four Shrewsbury pupils took to the water at the Chester Long Distance Sculls Head.

It was a successful trip for the rowers with George S (SH, UVI) winning the J18 Single scull and Tim M (SH, LVI) coming in third in the J17 event in the morning. Joe D (PH, IV) and Freddie A (O, IV) won the J15 doubles event in the afternoon.
