Shrewsbury
A jam-packed week of events for this year's DarwIN Festival
This weekend sees the start of the annual DarwIN Festival, a celebrating of Shrewsbury’s most famous son and Old Salopian Charles Darwin, which Shrewsbury School is proud to be supporting.
The event takes place from Sunday, February 6th to Sunday the 13th and sees a range of lectures, workshops and tours taking place across the town and on the school site.
After last year’s Festival taking place online due to the pandemic, this year sees a mixture of both in person events as well as online lectures, allowing stories and information on Charles Darwin, evolution and his theories to be enjoyed across the globe.
The festival begins with our talented musical Salopians performing an evening of chamber music and song on Sunday, February 6th at 7.30pm at St Alkmund’s Church, and Shrewsbury School’s involvement doesn’t end there. Also on offer we have our archivist, Dr Robin Brooke Smith telling the story of Charles Darwin as a student and Headmaster Leo Winkley outlines why we can be proud of Shrewsbury’s most famous son, and how his legacy is still relevant to us today.
Conluding with a birthday toast to Darwin on February 12th, which would have been his 213th birthday, there is plenty of activities on offering during this jam-packed week.
